1. INTRODUCTION
==========================================

Welcome to the “Boiling Point” readme file and congratulations for buying this
great product!

This readme contains many useful information and last-minute information on
elements of the game that appeared too late to be integrated into the manual.

==========================================
2. INSTALLATION & SETUP
==========================================

a-Minimum System Requirements

Before attempting to install Boiling Point, please verify that your computer
meets the minimum requirements listed below.

Processor : 2 Ghz
Operating System Windows : 2000 / Windows XP
Memory : 512 MB
DVD-ROM Drive : X6
Hard/ Disk Space : 4 GB
Video : 128 MB hardware T&L*
Audio : DirectX Compatible
Direct X 9.0c (included on DVD)

*Indicates device should be compatible with DirectX® version 9.0c or higher.
Hardware T&L video cards that do not support shaders, such as the GeForce 4MX or
Intel Extreme Graphics family, are not supported. The MATROX Parhelia and SIS
Xabre are also not supported.

This game will be enjoyable on all of the minimum specification hardware listed,
but we have worked with NVIDIA in an effort to provide the best out-of-box
experience possible.

We also recommend to close all real time and streaming applications in the
background and to prepare your hard drive for installation by running ScanDisk
and Disk Defragmenter prior to installation. These utilities are part of Windows
and can identify and resolve problems with your disk drive which could hinder
installation and/or playing of the game.

To launch these programs and optimize your hard disk drive:
- Open 'My Computer'.
- Right-click the disk drive you wish to install the game onto (usually C
- Select the 'Tools' tab.
- Click 'Check Now' to launch Scandisk.
- When Scandisk has completed, follow steps 1-3 and click 'Defragment Now' to
launch Disk Defragmenter.

- Note that defragmenting your disk drive can take a long time. It's a good idea
to start disk defragmenter and let it run overnight.

b-Installing the Game

To install Boiling Point,
1-Insert the DVD of Boiling Point into your DVD-ROM Drive.
2-If autoplay is enabled on your system, a window will appear, giving you the
option to Install the game. If nothing happens when you insert the DVD into the
drive, you will need to open 'My Computer', double-click your DVD-ROM drive
letter, then double-click Setup.exe.
3-Once the setup process begins, follow the on-screen prompts to install the game.

You will need to install the Windows Media Player 9 codecs to order to have all
videos correctly running. This will be installed at the end of the game
installation.

c-Starting the Game

There are a few ways to start the game.
1. Insert the Boiling Point Disc into your DVD-Rom Drive.
2. If you answered yes when the installer asked you whether you wanted to create
a desktop shortcut, you can double click that shortcut.

or

1. Insert the Boiling Point Disc into your DVD-Rom Drive.
2. Click on the Start Menu, then select 'Programs' (or 'All Programs' if you're
running Windows XP), then select 'Atari', then 'Boiling Point', then select the
'Boiling Point” icon.

3. TROUBLESHOOTING
==========================================

a-General known issues

Optimizing gameplay on slower computers

* If you are experiencing slowdown during gameplay, try adjusting the GFX and
SFX detail levels for all graphical options down to 'low', and then adjusting
options one by one until you achieve an acceptable balance between visual
quality and game performance.

Some rules on graphic settings:
- with 512 MB ram and/or slow GPU, please use the 'low' settings
- with 768 MB ram and/or medium GPU, please use the 'medium' settings
- with 1024 MB ram, you can use all 'high' settings (recommended if you have a
Radeon 9800 Pro or GeForce 6600)
- with 1024 MB ram or more, you can use 'very high' settings (even recommended
if you have a PC with high end components)

* With 512 MB of RAM you may experience some pausing during gameplay when
Windows is swapping memory to the disk. Please disable your anti-virus
application and terminate all other applications, including those running
invisibly in the background.

General hint on optimizing gameplay

With less than 1024 MB ram, try to avoid using
- High texture quality
- Normal Lighting
- Slider positions on Vegetation LOD
- Long distance at static geometry loading distance
The character LOD is completely depending on the power of your GPU.
Grass range and/or grass density can considerably decrease your frame rate in
the jungle.

Generally speaking, with less than 1GB of RAM, it is recommended you set the
virtual memory to a page file size with a starting value of 1,5 GB.

Messages that you can encounter depending on the Operating System

* Under XP Sp2 and using MS Firewall, the first time you start the game, a
message will ask you if you like to allow xenus.exe to pass the firewall. This
version of Boiling Point will not attempt to send or receive any data from
internet. You can either accept or refuse the game to pass the firewall, it will
have no impact on your system.

* Under Windows 2000 and 512 MB ram, a message may appear after a few minutes of
gameplay. This message will inform you about the insufficiency of virtual memory
and will remain in the background.

Others

* On systems with ATI Radeon graphics cards: using the latest drivers (ATI
Catalyst 5.4) may cause some graphics corruption. We are working on a patch to
resolve this issue, but for the time being we suggest using ATI Catalyst 5.2
drivers to avoid this problem.

*Due to the complexity and scope of the game, some minor but noticeable issues
such as NPC's and cars behaving strangely, texture dropouts when flying, and
minor framerate drops may be encountered. We are aware of these issues, and hope
to have a solution in the future via a game update.

* Upgrade function : with pistols and SMG weapons, a bug has been reported as
follows : trying to combine 2 upgraded pistols to create a dual pistol, the
upgrade statistics on the pistols disappears.

* After the player completes a mission, it can happen his car disappears whereas
its location is still marked on the radar. This bug has been rarely noticed
during the tests but unfortunately could not be solved yet.

b-Video issues

Outdated or incorrect video drivers are the cause of the majority of video
issues. Before contacting support, ensure you have the latest production
(release) drivers for your video card.

* ATI Technologies (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html)
* NVIDIA (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp)

As is noted in the minimum requirements not all video cards have hardware vertex
and pixel shader support even though they have the required video memory
available. Here is a non-exhaustive list of video cards that are not supported:

Intel 82810 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82815 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82830M Integrated Graphics
Intel 82845G Integrated Graphics
Intel 82852 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82855 Integrated Graphics

Nvidia GeForce 4 420 Go
Nvidia GeForce 4 440 Go
Nvidia GeForce 4 460 Go
SiS Xabre series video cards
XGI Volari V3 series video cards
XGI Volari V8 series video cards

c-Display issues

Some graphical problems have been noticed with Video Card 'S3 DeltaChrome' : a
grey screen appears for a few seconds before the game loads. Sometimes, some
textures can appear with a whitish-blue overlay around the character.

Depending on the situation, some text overlapping can be noticed, especially in
the 'hint' boxes.

It has been also mentioned that buttons in the main menu could appear as being
black boxes. This is not consistent and has been rarely reproduced. Anyway if
this occurs on your PC, please make sure you have the latest available video
drivers installed on your machine.

d-Sound issues

SOUND CARDS WITH 5.1 (OR MORE) CHANNELS - The audio output from Boiling Point is
restricted to stereo only unless you have a PC equipped with a Dolby Digital
Live chipset, such as the C-media CMI 8768 in the HDA Digital X Mystique 7.1 or
the Intel HD Audio controller part of the Intel 910/915/925 Express chipsets, in
which case it offers full Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Computers equipped
with sound cards offering 5.1 audio channels (or more) will not have any sound
playing on any of the extra channels, only stereo (front L and R). Some sound
cards have settings that allow you to send the left and right audio signals to
the other speakers connected to the computer. Consult the manual for your
soundcard, or contact the manufacture for details on how this may be accomplished.

e-Peripheral Issues

5. HINTS
==========================================

* Please carefully read dialogs while taking missions as it can happen that
special conditions are needed to perform a mission or task (E.g.: 'during
nighttime' - you may not able to locate the target during daytime)

* You can kill whoever you'd like to while playing... Please do not forget the
consequences it could led to...
You can even kill main characters at any point, but in order not to fail the
story too quickly, these characters will respawn some time after...
